History of Dovey Group Interests In Engineering

The Dovey Group has been active in engineering since the start of the 1950 with a large number of business interests. Notable examples include:

Power Units (1953) Ltd

This company was created to offer a full range of manufacturing services. One of its foremost contracts was commissioned in 1970 to complete the mechanical plant installation together with associate piping services for the new GKN rod plant at Cardiff Bay.

This technically challenging plant erection project covered billet handling, roughing/intermediate/ and intermediate/ and no-twist mills, laying heads, stelmor lines, reforming tubs, pouring reels, and a highly automated pallet coil handling system comprising of invertors, compactors and conveyors. Other construction features included fuel oil storage facilities, the boiler house and external distribution service pipelines.

Taylor Bros Engineers Limited and Sheppard Ingot Casting Machines Ltd These Newport based companies were well equipped, with a machine shop, fabrication shop and general plant and offered a huge capacity to the engineering industry. The machine shop boasted 25 machines in total for turning, milling, boring, planning, shaping, slotting and radial drilling. The fabrication shop sported shears, rolls, press brakes, profilers and welding plant. Within the general plant area 300 ton horizontal presses, 36” circular saws, mobile cranes with up to 10 ton capacity, 18 ton capacity gantries made up a formidable capacity.

The company also offered a design facility for the improvement of the company’s own products but the expertise of the draughtsmen employed was marketed to other engineering companies in the manufacturing sector.
